New Clematis hot spots open in time for season

The change of season is upon us. After a summer full of warm nights and hotter days, it seems as if the full-on heat and humidity will never break. Then, just before you’re about to give up all hope, you feel it. A sweet, cool breeze. You smile. Fall is here.

As we well know in Florida, the shift in weather isn’t the only change that takes place in the fall. Visitors are coming, and "season" is here -- complete with events, opportunities and activities we wait all year for. This year is no different. Downtown West Palm Beach is full of action and life, ready to entertain you for the full winter season.

Have you visited the GreenMarket lately? It takes place every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning late October and running through April, delighting visitors with a fresh supply of produce, flowers, live chef demonstrations, music, tasty treats and much more. The GreenMarket is located in front of City Hall at 200 2nd St.

Turning our attention to the beautiful Florida autumn evenings, the Kravis Center recently began to host "Movies by Moonlight," a series of outdoor films in the intimate outdoor Gosman Amphitheatre.

Movies by Moonlight is designed to bring the best of what Hollywood has to offer in comedy, musicals and drama. Seating is available with more than 600 permanent bleacher seats and a lawn that fits 800 more. Admission is just $5 and includes a complimentary bag of popcorn.

I attended Movies by Moonlight for the first time last month to see "Monster House" in honor of Halloween and had a blast! Lounging under the evening stars complete with blankets, snacks and friends was a perfect and affordable way to spend a Saturday evening.

The next Movie by Moonlight takes place Saturday Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and will feature the 1939 classic, "Mr. Smith goes to Washington," staring Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur and Claude Rains.

On Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., don’t miss the 1971 hit, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." What a great way to gear up for the holiday season! For a complete list of movies, visit the Kravis Center’s website at kravis.org/movies or call (561) 651-4312.

If you’re looking to shake things up a bit, check out one of the new entertainment venues. Lost Weekend, the Clematis landmark for over a decade, has finally re-opened on the second floor at 221 Clematis St. Friends of mine who have been living downtown longer then I remember Lost Weekend as the popular pool hall and hangout on Olive Avenue that burst on the scene in 1993 and dominated the area until 2005.

Thanks to owners Rodney Mayo, Scott Frielich and Cleve Mash, it’s now reopened as part of their Clematis Street Live concept. The venue is complete with vintage video games such as Galaga, Pacman and Frogger, plus four pool tables, foosball, a vintage skeet ball machine, and more than 150 beers from around the world.

To add to the excitement, Burt Rapoport’s newest concept -- Clematis Social -- will open this fall at 233 Clematis St. Clematis Social will cater to the hip, young, urban culture. (I have found out simply by mentioning his name around town, that Burt Rapoport is well known and respected throughout the restaurant industry, and has already created a lot of buzz about the new location.)

Burt has said the menu will offer a wide range of tapas for lunch, dinner and late night dining. I really can’t wait for this place to open so I can check it out! For more information on Clematis Social, visit go online to rapoportsrg.com.

Stay tuned next month to find out about all the holiday events planned for December including parades, New Year’s Eve parties and much more!
